Nokia: Our Windows Phones Need To Get Even Cheaper

There’s little question that Nokia is taking the low-end of the smartphone market very seriously these days. They just kicked off their race to the bottom with the colorful, budget-conscious Lumia 610 at this year’s Mobile World Congress, and while it’s far and away the least powerful of the Finnish company’s Windows Phone brood, it’s certainly priced to move at €189.

According to Nokia EVP Niklas Savander though, that price tag isn’t quite cheap enough. In a brief interview with Pocket-lint, Savander revealed that in order to better compete with Android, Nokia is very concerned with getting their hardware to even lower price points.

“Android is in many markets at the €100 price already, so that would suggest that if we are at €189 with the Lumia 610 we still have work to do when it comes to creating a lower-end first-time user smartphone.”

Now, Nokia is no stranger to pushing out low-cost, no-frills hardware — their venerable Nokia 1100 once held the crown for the best-selling bit of consumer electronics in the world, but getting their Windows Phones to that level of ubiquity will take a bit of doing. While Nokia toils away on the hardware front in an attempt to cut costs without stymieing performance too much, Microsoft’s Windows Phone Tango update will make sure that the eventual end-users don’t lose too much functionality in the process.

Nokia Lumia 900 available for pre-order in the UK

UK retailer Clove has gotten official word from Nokia about the price of the Nokia Lumia 900 and they've put it up for pre-order. The 900 was first unveiled for AT&T but the global version of the phone was announced just a few days ago at the MWC.

The global Lumia 900 is pretty much the same handset as the AT&T version, with the notable exclusion of LTE. You still get a 4.3" ClearBlack AMOLED screen, 8MP camera with 720p video and 16GB of storage all encased in a polycarbonate unibody.

Anyway, the Nokia Lumia 900 is available for pre-order from Clove for ?530 (?635, $845). The exact date of availability is still not clear (all Clove knows is it's going to be "some time Q2"). They are also not sure what color options they'll get, but will release the info as soon as they have it.

Carphone Warehouse have a page for the Lumia 900 too, but that's only so you can sign up for a notification when the phone becomes available. They do list May as the month they expect the phone to be available.

Here's the preorder page if you're interested. Also, you can read our hands-on with the Lumia 900 if you're not familiar with it already.

Nokia 808 PureView in focus: An interview with Damian Dinning

The Nokia 808 PureView certainly made a splash at this year's Mobile World Congress, pinning the company back on the cameraphone map in an extremely advantageous position.

If you've been living in a cave these past few days, you might have missed some of the juicy details about the Nokia 808 and what makes it so special. So we'll make a quick recap.

The Nokia 808 PureView has a 4-inch AMOLED display with the rather lowly resolution of 360 x 640 pixels. Spiritually succeeding the Nokia N8, it runs Nokia Belle (previously known as Symbian) and it's centered around a 1.3 GHz processor. While this smartphone might technically revolve around that processor, what's got the publics imagination is actually the never-before-seen 41MP multi-aspect camera sensor.

Nokia 808 PureView

Capable of shooting full-resolution shots of up to 38 megapixels and utilizing the industry's first pixel oversampling technology for delivering vastly superior lower-resolution photos (5MP and 8MP), the Nokia 808 camera is a ?quantum leap forward in cameraphone performance,? as Nokia themselves put it. Another industry's first is the lossless digital zooming in less-than-maximum resolution shots and video.

The garnishes on this excellent dish are the Carl Zeiss lens, the xenon flash, a relatively large F2.4 aperture, the mechanical shutter coupled with a neutral density filter, and there's also, of course, FullHD video recording.

Damian Dinning

We had Damian Dinning, Head of Imaging Experience - Nokia Smart Devices, to tell us more about his team's baby and how it came to be.

Damian has played a key role in the development of iconic devices such as the Nokia N95, Nokia N82, Nokia N86 8MP, and N8, among others, and he's also head of the team that delivered the Nokia 808.

We did delve into the inner workings of the Nokia 808 PureView 41MP camera sensor yesterday, however we are more than eager to hear the story behind the product from the man himself.

We rarely do interviews but the Nokia 808 is a real whopper. The sheer hype it generated yesterday almost took our site down for a moment. The camera enthusiast inside of us can't get enough of it either and Damian Dinning is the man to see to learn everything about this exciting new smartphone (and about cameraphones in general).

Nokia 701, 700 and 603 to get Belle FP1, same as 808 PureView

Nokia revealed that the Nokia 808 PureView runs Nokia Belle OS Feature Pack 1, which brings a number of improvements. Also, they have some good news and some bad news for owners of current Belle devices too, depending on what device you have.

The good news is that if you have Nokia 701, 700 or 603, then you'll be getting the feature pack soon. The bad news is that other devices (like the older ones that launched with Symbian^3 or the Nokia 500) are not invited to the party.

Here's some more good news/bad news - the 701 and 700 will both have their CPUs bumped to 1.3GHz by the update, matching the 808 PureView. The Nokia 603 will remain on 1GHz.

The Belle Feature Pack 1 update also brings a new, faster, HTML5-capable web browser, the Microsoft Apps and the latest version of Nokia Maps.

Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Headphone will enhance the audio experience for both music and videos.

Belle FP1 will also improve the user interface though details on that are scarce - the multitasking bar has been updated and the notification bar is "even better". There are 20 new widgets included too.

The release for Belle Feature Pack 1 is planned for sometime in the next few months.

More camera samples from Nokia 808 PureView

The striking 41MP camera of the Nokia 808 PureView won it an award and we can't get enough of looking at camera samples from it. Nokia themselves released several still and video samples and they were nothing short of amazing.

The Handheld Blog were lucky enough to get a chance to take out the 808 PureView for a quick spin themselves. Here are some crops from the original 38MP photos.

100% crops from Nokia 808 PureView full-resolution photos

You can also visit their site if you want to look at the original photos, but be warned they weigh in at over 10MB each. It's also worth noting that the Nokia 808 PureView is a couple of months away from launch, so Nokia still have time to polish the image processing firmware, as Nokia's own Damian Dinning attests more than once.

Mary McDowell came on stage and got busy right away announcing three new Nokia Asha phones - the Asha 202, Asha 203 and Asha 302. The Asha 302 is a QWERTY messenger, while the Asha 203 is identical to the Asha 202, but with an extra SIM slot.

Those two come with a huge pack of EA games, no less than 40. You can download those off the Nokia Market for free during the first 60 days. That's equivalent to ?75 of added value.

Nokia Asha 202 and 203

That's more than the price of the phones themselves, they'll go for about ?60 ($80). Launch is set for the next few weeks.

MWC 2012: Nokia overview

Last year Nokia didn't announce a single new phone at the MWC, but this year they came ready to steal the show. As expected, they unveiled the Nokia Lumia 610 WP7 Tango phone, worldwide availability for the Lumia 900 and a three new Ashas, but what really sent the crowd into a roar was the Nokia 808 Pure View.

Mary McDowell had to repeat it twice, so that people could be sure they didn't mishear - the 808 Pure View packs an amazing sensor with a whopping 41 megapixels resolution. Yep, 41MP. The camera lets you snap 3MP, 5MP and 8MP photos and because they're saved in a new image format, you can zoom in those photos with little image quality degradation at any time after taking the photo.

Or you could squeeze out almost every megapixel that the sensor has a shoot a 38MP image. That's more than most DSLRs!

The new Nokia Lumia 610 isn't meant to wow you, it's meant to be a highly affordable Windows Phone mobile. With an expected price of ?189, the Lumia 610 brings the price point for entry into Microsoft's mobile world way down.

We also got three new feature phones, all of them Ashas. The Asha 302 is a QWERTY messenger with Microsoft Exchange email support. The other two - the Asha 202 and Asha 203 - are single and dual-SIM phones respectively and come with a repertoire of 40 free games - a combined worth more than the price of the phones themselves.

Nokia Lumia 610 pictures and details emerge

With only hours left till Nokia's press conference at MWC, we have some fresh details and images of the upcoming announcements.

Nokia Lumia 610 pictured below, will be the company's entry level Windows Phone handset. The device is expected to feature a 3.2" screen, 3MP camera, and Windows Phone Tango on board. Given the nature of the new OS, it shouldn't be a surprise if the device comes with 256MB of RAM.

The Nokia Lumia 610 will reportedly be priced at ?175, when it hits the shelves. India will be one of the first markets to receive the device.

Next in line is the global version of the Nokia Lumia 900. The AT&T version caused quite a splash during CES, so there is no surprise here.

Also, don't forget the PureView camera phone, whose teaser emerged a few days ago. The device is expected to be the successor of the venerable N8, so the interest towards it is huge.

We will be covering the Nokia press conference live (it starts at 7:30AM GMT), so stick around for the full scoop on the company's MWC lineup.

Nokia to unveil cheaper Windows Phones at MWC

We all know that Nokia is the king of entry level devices, and it seems they're keen on retaining that title as their upcoming press conference at MWC will supposedly reveal several new midrange WP-powered devices, alongside the new Lumia 610 and the worldwide version of the Lumia 900.

This also comes alongside news that Nokia has become the largest Windows Phone manufacturer, beating out HTC. This is truly an impressive achievement, considering Nokia has only been selling Windows Phone since the start of Q4 2011.

The Nokia/Microsoft partnership would to the casual observer sound like two behemoths dominating a significant piece of the global smartphone market, but in case you're one of the few that need to be reminded, WP and Symbian combined accounted for less than 14% of global smartphone sales in 2011.

The Nokia press conference at MWC is coming up fast, so we expect to find out exactly which devices Nokia plans to unveil very shortly.

Nokia teases PureView monster cameraphone on video

As MWC hype is picking up momentum, Nokia decided to join the fun and released a short video trailer of its upcoming PureView smartphone.

The Nokia PureView is the rumored successor to the Nokia N8 camera-centered smartphone. Earlier online gossip had it its official name will be Nokia N808 PureView and it will be wielding the most capable camera mounted on a smartphone to date.

The Nokia video teaser doesn't really do much to confirm or refute those rumors, but we are hoping they come out right. The camera division of the company did an excellent job of the N8, but the handset was let down by its unimpressive chipset and less than stellar OS and UI.

The Nokia MWC press conference is scheduled for next Monday and, naturally, we'll be on site covering it live for you. Stay tuned!

Nokia Carla smartphones to ship in Q3, updates coming in Q4

More details on the upcoming Nokia Carla release came in. The platform previously known as Symbian will get its next update in Q3 of this year, when the first smartphones running Nokia Carla will hit the shelves.

According to the latest rumors, second-gen Belle smartphone, including Nokia 603, 700 and 701 will start shipping with the new version of their OS first. Later on, the rest of the Belle-running smartphones in the Nokia portfolio will get Carla as an update. Scheduled for Q4, the update should cover N8,C7,E7,X7,E6,C6-01.

Despite what previous rumors were saying, Carla will be distributed to all smartphones currently on Belle. However, those that lack NFC capabilities and 1GHz processors will get a trimmed down version of the update to avoid performance hiccups.

Finally, we learned that the Nokia N8 successor, which should be unveiled on Monday at the Nokia MWC press conference won't be the last device to run on Carla. There are at least two more Carla smartphones in works - they should both come out this year.

It would be best if you take those rumors with a pinch of salt, but the source has a decent record for these things and there are few things that sound unreasonable, so it's probably quite close to the truth.

Thanks, KF, for sending this in.

Nokia Lumia 610 and Asha 305 get Indonesian certification

Indonesia's FCC counterpart, Postel, is proving to be an interesting source of info on new phones. Their database contains two Nokias that aren?t official yet - the rumored Nokia Lumia 610 and a Nokia 305, which was unheard of until now.

Now, the database lists only the most basic info on the phone (if even that) but with rumors floating around that Nokia will announce three smartphones and three feature phones at the MWC, these numbers give us a glimpse of what will be announced.

The Nokia Lumia 610 is one of the phones expected to be unveiled in Barcelona and this listing confirms that it's a real device. Postel site reveals that the 610 will have 2G and 3G connectivity, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth but that's it (they only test if wireless devices are within specs, so that's all the info we can hope to get).

The Nokia 305 is probably an Asha device, but there's not even Wi-Fi/Bluetooth info on it. Judging by model number alone, it should take over from the Asha 303 as the new top of the line feature phone by Nokia.

A previous rumor claimed that a different set of Asha phones will be announced at the MWC, but there's no way to know for sure (other than waiting for a couple of weeks).
