Amazing time-lapse video captures the night sky

Temporal Distortion from Randy Halverson on Vimeo

Think you've seen the night sky? Not like this. Photographer Randy Halverson took months (when the weather was clear) to shoot the stars overhead of the White River in central South Dakota, Arches National Park in Utah, Canyon of the Ancients area of Colorado, and Madison, Wisconsin. He put it all together in a time-lapse video set to music by the out-of-this-world composer Bear McCreary, who wrote the moody soundtracks to "Battlestar Galactica" and "The Walking Dead."

Along with a star-filled sky, the photog caught the tail of a meteor and the northern lights. The score adds a dramatic and other-worldly counterpoint. Feast your eyes. Here, Halverson takes us through "Temporal Distortion." If you can't get enough of this amazing light show, check out the extended 23-minute version.

What made you think to do this?
I've been shooting time-lapse for over two years. I really just wanted to get some unique angles of the Milky Way; the aurora were mostly unexpected. On a few of the nights I was actually set up to shoot the Milky Way. When it showed up I had to turn the cameras to the north to shoot it. I contacted Bear McCreary last fall and asked him if he was interested in collaborating with me and doing the music for it. I thought his music would fit perfectly with it, so I held on to the footage until he had time to do it.

Seems like a great way to get people to appreciate astronomy who might not ordinarily be stargazers. Was that your goal?
My goal really was just to get some good Milky Way shots, but when I ended up getting the meteors, aurora, and other phenomena like airglow or noctilucent clouds, I thought it would make the video more interesting. I'm an amateur at astronomy myself, but I can always ask a real astronomer if I have questions about what I catch.

Have you done this before?
I've been shooting just time-lapse for over two years, but my most popular have been my last two: Tempest Milky Way and Plains Milky Way.

What is the technique?
I use Canon DSLR cameras and take still images, not video. The shutter is open for 20 to 30 seconds on most of the shots. This allows the sensor on the camera to gather more light than the eye can see and makes the stars, Milky Way, and aurora appear brighter than they are to the eye. I also have the camera mounted on a Stage Zero Dolly from Dynamic Perception. This motion-controlled rig moves the camera slightly between each exposure, and gives the camera the motion you see in the time-lapse. I then have to edit the thousands of still images together in a computer, to assemble it into a movie.

Are you surprised by the response?
Yeah, I am. I think music is really important on these videos, and I think Bear McCreary's music works really well with the video, and that helps.

All of them are really impressive, so let's start.

Michael Douglas films anti-insider trading video for FBI

Actor Michael Douglas has filmed a new public service announcement for the FBI that plays on his character Gordon Gekko from the film "Wall Street."

In 1987, Douglas won an Oscar for his portrayal of the fictional Gekko. Douglas and writer-director Oliver Stone constructed the villainous Gekko character as a cautionary tale of the excesses of corporate greed. But in the quarter century since the film's release, Gekko's infamous "greed is good" speech has become a rallying cry of many working on Wall Street.

But now, Douglas is playing on the character's fame to warn about the dangers of insider trading. The PSA begins with a clip from "Wall Street" before transitioning to a present-day Douglas, who says:

"Hello, I'm Michael Douglas. In the movie 'Wall Street,' I played Gordon Gekko, a greedy corporate executive who cheated to profit while innocent investors lost their savings.

"The movie was fiction, but the problem is real. Our economy is increasingly dependent on the success and the integrity of the financial markets. If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is."

FBI Special Agent David Chaves tells Bloomberg News that Douglas wanted to do something to help combat what he sees as a misguided culture on Wall Street. Chaves says Douglas told him people working on Wall Street often approach him, offering a "high-five" for his portrayal of Gekko.

"We thought one of the most revered actors of our time would be a great voice for combating crime on Wall Street," Chaves said.

An often-overlooked fact from "Wall Street" is that the Gekko character never says the phrase, "greed is good." While passionately arguing for a business structure in which corporations are operated by the actual shareholders who have a direct stake in the company, Gekko declares, "Greed, for lack of a better word, is good."

This is also not the first time Douglas has revisited the Gekko character. In 2010, Douglas and Stone reunited for a "Wall Street" sequel. While critics praised Douglas' performance (he was nominated for a Golden Globe for best supporting actor), the film was largely considered a critical and commercial disappointment.

Acer CouldMobile shown off in a hands-on video

The Acer CloudMobile was recently shown off at an event in Milan, Italy to the press. The folks at Cellular Magazine who attended the event thankfully managed to get a hands-on video of the device in action. Unfortunately, the video is not in English but you can get a decent idea about the phone.

The Acer CloudMobile is easily the most interesting phone to have come out of Acer. In fact, it marena.com/acer_cloudmobile_wins_an_award_before_its_actual_annoucement-news-3809.php" target="_blank">won an iF design award even before it was officially launched. But it's not just the design that's great about it. The CloudMobile also comes loaded with some pretty great features.

For starters there is Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich available out of the box, which instantly earns it major brownie points. Next it has a 4.3-inch, 720p display with on-screen virtual controls, just like on the Galaxy Nexus. The device in the video above also has a separate row of capacitive keys below the display but that can be excused since it is a prototype device. The device shown in the press images does not have these extra keys.

Next there is a 1.5GHz dual-core processor on the inside, 8 megapixel camera, HSPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC connectivity.

The phone is expected to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress next week, which is when we will find out more about it.

Nokia teases PureView monster cameraphone on video

As MWC hype is picking up momentum, Nokia decided to join the fun and released a short video trailer of its upcoming PureView smartphone.

The Nokia PureView is the rumored successor to the Nokia N8 camera-centered smartphone. Earlier online gossip had it its official name will be Nokia N808 PureView and it will be wielding the most capable camera mounted on a smartphone to date.

The Nokia video teaser doesn't really do much to confirm or refute those rumors, but we are hoping they come out right. The camera division of the company did an excellent job of the N8, but the handset was let down by its unimpressive chipset and less than stellar OS and UI.

The Nokia MWC press conference is scheduled for next Monday and, naturally, we'll be on site covering it live for you. Stay tuned!

Thanks to KF for sending this in!
