Motorola RAZR update brings battery and camera improvements

Motorola has released a software update for the international GSM version of the RAZR. It isn't the long-awaited Ice Cream Sandwich RAZR owners are hoping for (psst, check here), but rather the update is based on the good ol' Android 2.3. However, there are a couple of new features to keep owners happy.

First off, there are new Smart Action presets available, such as Auto Text and VIP Caller mode. On top of that, Moto says battery life is better due to software optimization and the camera is also improved.

The update is currently available in the UK, France, Spain and Italy with more regions to follow. To check if the update has been made available for your RAZR, check System Updates in the About phone menu.

Apple wins another injunction against Motorola in Germany

The legal battle between Apple and Motorola continues but the latest round goes to the team from Cupertino. Apple has managed to win an injunction against Motorola for its patent regarding the bounce animation displayed in the photo gallery, as was first seen on the iPhone and then later on copied in Motorola devices (along with almost every other touchscreen device out there today).

Thanks to this injunction, Apple can now enforce the ruling, if it so wishes, which would require Motorola to destroy all the existing offending devices in its possession Germany and recall those the remaining ones from German retailers.

Having said that, this does not mean that Motorola could never sell those devices in Germany again, as the fix is relatively easy. All Motorola has to do is modify the photo gallery on its devices such that it does not violate Apple's patent and they could legally start selling the devices again (assuming Apple enforces the ruling).

Google's Motorola acquisition finally approved

Just as they said they would, the European Commission yesterday reviewed the case between Google and the mobile division of Motorola, and has cleared the merger. The Department of Justice's Antitrust Division followed suit close behind and dropped its investigation, effectively legalizing the deal in the United States. Both the EC and DoJ worked in close conjunction during their respective investigations, so it is no surprise that these announcements arrived so close together.

The Department of Justice's investigation also examined Apple's acquisition of certain Novell patents, as well as Microsoft, RIM, and Apple's bids for patents in the 2011 Nortel bankruptcy auction. Such a widespread investigation by the DoJ is likely because of the large number of legal disputes between the big players in the smartphone industry, a trend that both the EC and DoJ claim should lessen through fair patent acquisition, like that by Google in regards to Motorola.

While these were the last of the major obstacles in preventing the acquisition, both governing bodies vowed to keep a close eye on how Google would handle the roughly 17,000 mobile patents it would acquire from the deal, and make sure they are licensed them to any third parties under fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.

Motorola might show an Intel-powered droid at the MWC

We've already seen the first phone powered by Intel's Medfield mobile x86 chipset and now rendered images of Motorola droid phone bring their promise of their own Medfield phone closer to reality.

Motorola announced they will be making an Intel-powered phones at CES and now rumor has it that we?ll see the first of those showcased at the next major tech event, the Mobile World Congress.

We don't know much about the phone aside that it will be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (that will make it Moto's first phone with ICS out of the box) and that it will have interface customizations by Motorola.

The phone will reportedly have an instant-on feature (something along the lines of HTC's Fast Boot) and its camera will be capable of 15fps burst capture.

The screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio, so 720p resolution is more than likely (it's the native resolution for ICS). Whether it will be a Super AMOLED (like the Motorola RAZR and Galaxy Nexus have) is anyone's guess.

The chipset will most likely be the single-core Intel Atom Z2460, which is the only chipset in the Medfield family right now.

We'll be attending the MWC and we'll make sure to swing by Motorola's booth to learn more about this droid. If the rumors pan out, of course, there's no official word from Moto that they'll be showing this device or that it even exists.
