Gresso Regal Black melds titanium and glass together

Luxury phone maker Gresso is adding a new model to its Avantgarde lineup - the Gresso Regal Black. The handset is styled to look like a speedboat and (as usual) is priced for people who already own a speedboat.

The Regal Black is machined out of a single slab of titanium, making it Gresso's first attempt at a unibody design. The surface of the phone is painted black and has a rough matte texture.

Only 9% of the original metal remains in the frame after the machining process is done. The front and back of the phone are made of mineral glass, tinted black by an exclusive process designed especially for the Regal series.

The Gresso Regal Black measures 121 x 46 x 12 mm and weighs 130 g. It runs on Nokia's Series 40 platform, so don't expect any technological miracles as far as the software is concerned.

What you do need to know about the Regal Black is that only 333 of them will be made, so it certainly offers some exclusivity. If you want to be in the club, you'll be able to snatch one in April from authorized Gresso retailers or online. It will set you back $5000, but don't tell that to your friends that as this is fairly cheap for the class.

HTC Sensation XE Android 4.0 ICS update now seeding

The Android 4.0 ICS update marathon for the non-Nexus devices has just begun. HTC drew first blood and started seeding the latest edition of the Google OS to its Sensation XE former flagship. Also included in the package is an updated Sense UI, carrying the version number 3.6.

So far, we've received confirmation of the Android 4.0 update being seeded to Sensation XE units in Germany and the Nordic countries, but we expect the rest of Europe to follow soon. Global availability can't be far away too, knowing the HTC usual practices.

You can check if the update is available for your region under Software Updates in the Settings menu. Keep in mind that the update requires a download of a file nearly 300MB in size, so you better use a Wi-Fi connection for it.

If yours isn't among the lucky units to have the update already and you don't feel like waiting, you can follow this link to the always useful XDA-developers forum to download the files and flash it yourselves.

Special thanks to Stefan ?sterlund for sending this in!

Motorola RAZR update brings battery and camera improvements

Motorola has released a software update for the international GSM version of the RAZR. It isn't the long-awaited Ice Cream Sandwich RAZR owners are hoping for (psst, check here), but rather the update is based on the good ol' Android 2.3. However, there are a couple of new features to keep owners happy.

First off, there are new Smart Action presets available, such as Auto Text and VIP Caller mode. On top of that, Moto says battery life is better due to software optimization and the camera is also improved.

The update is currently available in the UK, France, Spain and Italy with more regions to follow. To check if the update has been made available for your RAZR, check System Updates in the About phone menu.

Nokia cuts 4,000 jobs in struggle to win smartphone market

HELSINKI - World-leading mobile phone maker Nokia will cut 4,000 jobs at its smartphone manufacturing facilities in Finland, Hungary and Mexico by the end of 2012, it said on Wednesday.
"The expected headcount impact by country is 2,300 in Komarom (Hungary), 700 in Reynosa (Mexico) and 1,000 in Salo (Finland)," company spokesman James Etheridge told AFP.
The job cuts follow a review of smartphone operations announced in September 2011, when the company warned jobs may be cut at the plants in question.
The factories in Komarom, Reynosa and Salo will in the future focus on software-heavy smartphone customisation, while manufacturing will shift to Asia to shorten the time it takes for products to get to market, the company said in a statement.
"But these planned changes are all about speed and responsiveness and ultimately, our competitiveness," Etheridge said.
Nokia's shares edged up 0.05 percent on Wednesday to 3.89 euros while the Helsinki market added 1.4 percent overall.
The job cuts come as Nokia struggles to secure a foothold in the fiercely competitive smartphone market, with its newly-launched flagship line Lumia failing to correct falling sales in its overall smartphone business.
Nokia's comeback fight comes amid a dynamic and differentiated market, with many players offering consumers a variety of options, said Horace Dedieu of the Helsinki-based mobile industry blog Asymco.
"My initial impression is that it's a good product, but, right now, being good isn't enough," Dedieu told Finnish state broadcaster YLE about the Lumia.
In its 2011 full-year earnings report released two weeks ago, Nokia said it had sold "well over one million" Lumia phones since their launch in October in Europe, Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.
However, others have noted that while the Lumia has received good grades from users, not enough are buying the new smartphone.
The phone's fledgling reputation has also already been tainted by reports of returns due to battery life problems.
Moreover, users ranked Apple's iPhone above the Lumia 800 in a small scale usability comparison recently conducted by researchers at Finland's Abo University and published last week.
"Seven out of 10 test users chose the iPhone as a whole over the Lumia," the results concluded.
That is bad news for the former undisputed world leader, which is desperate to stop the haemorrhaging of its market share.
The company announced last year it would no longer provide market share figures, which peaked at 40 percent in the first half of 2008, but analysts estimate Nokia today holds only about 25 percent.
Nokia is depending heavily on its partnership with Microsoft and the new phones to help maintain its ranking as the world's largest mobile phone maker, as RiM's Blackberry, Apple's iPhone and handsets running Google's Android platform take growing bites out of its market share.
If Nokia's Lumia fails to make an impression this year, the struggle to regain traction in the smartphone segment will be lost, mobile technology analyst Ari Hakkarainen told AFP.
"The next two Lumia models will make or break it for Nokia, they need to come this year, and they need to come soon" to build momentum, he added.
In the fourth quarter, Nokia sold just 19.6 million smartphones -- 31 percent fewer than in the same quarter of 2010 and far behind market-leader Apple, which reported 37 million units sold, and runner-up Samsung, which announced 36.5 million smartphone sales in the quarter.
Nokia registered a net loss of 1.2 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in 2011, compared to a net profit of 1.8 billion euros a year earlier, while the final quarter of the year was hammered with a 1.07-billion-euro net loss after a profit of 745 million in the same period a year earlier.

Romney takes 6 Super Tuesday states, Santorum nets 3

Updated: 1:58 a.m. ET
(CBS News) CBS News projects that Mitt Romney will win Ohio's key primary contest Tuesday, after a neck-and-neck race with rival Rick Santorum to eke out a victory in the pivotal battleground state.
With 96 percent reporting in Ohio, Romney has 38 percent support to Santorum's 37 percent. Newt Gingrich is in third place with 15 percent and Ron Paul follows with 9 percent.
Mitt Romney has also won primaries in Virginia, Massachusetts and Vermont, as well as the Idaho caucuses. Rick Santorum won primaries in Tennessee and Oklahoma, and in the North Dakota caucuses. In Georgia, Gingrich clinched his first primary victory since South Carolina's January 21 primary contest.
Ron Paul did not win any contests on Tuesday, but he did finish second in four states: Vermont, Idaho, North Dakota and Virginia.
The Associated Press reports that Romney also won Alaska's Super Tuesday caucuses. According to the AP's tally, Santorum came in a close second, followed by Ron Paul and then Newt Gingrich. The state's 24 delegates are allocated proportionally.
With voters in ten states selecting their choice to be the Republican presidential nominee and 419 delegates up for grabs, Super Tuesday could be a make-or-break night for the remaining Republican presidential candidates.
CBS News estimates show Romney with a total of 361 delegates, Santorum with 112 delegates, Gingrich with 80 delegates and Paul with 24 delegates.
Super Tuesday results by state: Alaska | Georgia | Idaho | Massachusetts | North Dakota | OhioOklahoma | Tennessee | Vermont | Virginia
In remarks to reporters following the Ohio call for Romney, his campaign spokesman Ryan Williams said the campaign was "pleased" to have "gained the trust of Ohio voters."
"Nearly a week ago Governor Romney was behind in some polls by double digits. But Ohio voters responded to his pro-jobs and pro-growth message, and rallied behind him the days before the primary and helped push him to victory tonight," Williams said.
Speaking out of Boston before his victory was projected in the Buckeye State, Romney stayed positive that his campaign was "going to get more" wins under its belt by the end of the night, and that by his count, the delegate situation "looks good."
"Tonight, we're -- we're doing some counting. We're counting up the delegates for the convention, and it looks good. And we're counting down the days until November, and that looks even better," Romney told an enthusiastic crowd.  With almost all precincts reporting in Massachusetts, Romney, who served as the state's governor between 2003 and 2007, was ahead overwhelmingly, with 72 percent support.
In his remarks, Romney went on to accuse President Obama of being "unresponsive" to the wishes of the American people, and blasted him for allegedly operating "by command instead of by consensus."
Super Tuesday sets up long slog to GOP nomination
How Romney won Ohio
How Rick Santorum won Tennessee and Oklahoma
"President Obama seems to believe he's unchecked by the Constitution," Romney said.  "He's unresponsive to the will of our people. He operates by command instead of by consensus. In a second term, he'd be unrestrained by the demands of re-election. And if there's one thing we cannot afford is four years of Barack Obama with no one to answer to."
A win in Ohio would have been considered a huge boon for either Romney or Santorum on Super Tuesday. For Romney, the victory could signal a return to the so-called inevitability of his candidacy; for Santorum, it would have proven his ability to win in a crucial swing state with a large, diverse population.
Polls showed the two candidates neck-and-neck in the past several weeks, although the most recent surveys trended toward Romney.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Romney and his super PAC outspent Santorum four-to-one in Ohio, with Romney and his super PAC spending just over $4 million on TV and radio ads in the state, and Santorum and his super PAC spending $968,000.
Speaking to supporters in Ohio, Santorum called Tuesday a "big night" for his campaign -- but emphasized that he was "up against enormous odds."
"This was a big night tonight, lots of states. We're going to win a few, we're going to lose a few, but as it looks right now, we're going to get at least a couple of gold medals and a whole passel full of silver medals," he said. "We went up against enormous odds, not just here in the state of Ohio, where -- who knows how much we were outspent -- but in every state. There wasn't a single state in the list that I just gave you where I spent more money than the people I was able to defeat to win that state. In every case, we overcame the odds."
According to exit polls, the economy is the top issue for voters in the primary states today, while the ability to defeat President Obama is candidate the quality that matters most to voters.
In both Tennessee and Oklahoma, Santorum did well among the approximately 75 percent of primary voters who identified as evangelical Christians, according to exit polls. He did particularly well among those voters who said it mattered "a great deal" to them that the candidate share their religious beliefs.
In Tennessee, with nearly all precincts reporting, Santorum led Romney with 37 percent support to 28 percent support. In Oklahoma, with nearly all precincts reporting, Santorum bested Romney with 34 percent to 28 percent.
In Georgia, which he represented in Congress for 20 years, Gingrich was ahead with 47 percent support with nearly all precincts reporting. Romney came in second with 26 percent. Santorum followed with 20 percent.
Exit polls out of Georgia showed Gingrich winning among men, women, and white evangelical voters. He also led among very conservative voters and those who said the economy was their top issue.
Gingrich's victory in Georgia could give the candidate a much-needed boost in momentum after a string of losses in recent nominating contests.
In remarks in Atlanta after the Georgia polls closed Tuesday night, Gingrich made clear that he plans to stay in the race, even as he struggles to maintain his momentum as a candidate.
"Remember when it was Tim Pawlenty who was going to crowd me out? And remember then when it was Michele Bachmann? And then it was our good friend, Herman Cain the first time? And then, for a brief moment, it was Donald Trump almost," Gingrich told supporters. "And then it was our good friend, Rick Perry, then it was Herman Cain the second time, and now it's Santorum."
He continued: "You just can't quite get across to them: It's all right. There are lots of bunny rabbits that run through. I am the tortoise. I just take one step at a time."
In Virginia, Romney earned 60 percent to Ron Paul's 40 percent. But both Gingrich and Rick Santorum -- who could have posed a threat for Romney in Virginia -- failed to get on the ballot, leaving voters to choose between just Romney and Paul.
Ron Paul gets boost from crossover voters in Vermont and Virginia
Home state ties key to Gingrich's Georgia victory
Gingrich fights for relevance after Super Tuesday
Romney also won by a significant margin in Vermont, where he was up 40 percent to Paul's 25 percent with most precincts reporting. Romney likely enjoyed an advantage in the state due to its proximity to Massachusetts.
With 76 percent of precincts reporting in North Dakota, Santorum led with 40 percent to Paul's 28 percent. Romney followed with 24 percent.
In Idaho, with 64 percent of precincts reporting, Romney won with 64 percent, and Ron Paul came in second with 18 percent. Santorum followed at 16 percent.
All ten states are awarding their delegates proportionately - allocating them based on the outcome in congressional districts, a candidate's percentage of the statewide vote, or a combination of the two.
This weekend, there are caucuses in Kansas and the Virgin Islands, and the Wyoming caucuses will end. On Tuesday, Alabama and Mississippi will hold primaries, and Hawaii and American Samoa will hold caucuses.

37 ‘Buckyballs’ swallowed by toddler in latest scary magnet incident

An Oregon toddler who complained to her parents about flu-like symptoms this week had actually swallowed 37 “Buckyballs” magnets, MSNBC reports. The doctors removed the magnets from Payton Bushnell’s intestines Monday, and she is expected to make a full recovery.

A package of Buckyballs and its warning label. (AP)
In a statement on its Web siteTuesday, the maker of Buckyballs said it was “saddened” to learn about the incident, but that “this unfortunate incident underscores the fact that Buckyballs and Buckycubes are for adults. They are not toys and are not intended for children.” The company urged consumers to read and comply with the warnings on its products.
Those warnings haven’t kept many kids from getting a hold of the magnets, however. In January,The Post’s Lena Sun reported on a more serious incident involving Buckyballs:
Meredith DelPrete, 10, was at school one day and did something that she said is popular among kids her age: She pretended to have a pierced tongue. The Fairfax County fifth-grader took two magnetic balls from her pocket and placed one on top of her tongue and the other on the underside. The magnets, the size of a BB, are extremely powerful. They made it look like she had a stud. She opened her mouth to show a friend.
That’s when the silver orbs rolled off.
“I could feel them in the back of my throat. I tried to get them out, but I couldn’t. So I just swallowed them,” she said in an interview this week.
That accidental swallowing led to five days at Inova Fairfax Hospital, at least 10 X-rays, three CT scans and an endoscopy. Finally, on Jan. 20, a surgeon used a metal instrument to manipulate the magnets into her appendix, avoiding major surgery. He then removed her appendix, and the magnets, doctors said
