Daily Roundup: March 12, 2012

By Sandy Fitzgerald | Mon Mar 12, 2012 4:15 pm

The Apple-Samsung battle heats up, RIM's BlackBerry loses a key sector of customers and other stories from today's news.

Patent Wars: Apple Says Samsung Violated Court Order

Apple is accusing Samsung of only complying partly with a court order that requires it to offer source code for its 4G smartphones and Galaxy tablets involved in its U.S. patent lawsuit filed in California.

The U.S case is just one of dozens of similar lawsuits filed between Apple and Samsung, as the two tech giants hurl accusations about violating each others' patents and designs.

Several Sprint 4G smartphones are on sale for just a penny on Amazon, with a new activation. The sale runs through March 26, but if you buy your phone by March 19, you'll get free activation.

The phones include a few Galaxy S2 and Evo 3D devices, among others. Buyers will have to switch from their current carriers, and people using Sprint plans need to pay an extra $10 for 4G speed.

CBS CEO Leslie Moonves revealed during a talk at the UCLA Entertainment Symposium over the weekend that he had spoken with the late Steve Jobs about providing content for a subscription-based video service, but declined the idea.

Had the talks been successful, Apple TV, the set-top box that allows viewers to stream programs through the Internet, could have gotten a boost over its competitors, including Netflix, by being able to stream network programming earlier in the game.

China Telecom began selling the iPhone 4S last week, but the deal may be too late for Apple to catch Samsung, which has a market share that's three times larger and still growing.

Apple also limited itself by not making a device compatible with the nation's largest carrier, China Mobile, meaning the iPhone -- even newer models -- may not catch up with Samsung in China, despite the love the Chinese have for Apple's smartphone.

BlackBerry, once the undisputed leader on Capitol Hill, is losing traction as D.C. staffers are switching over to iPhones. The BlackBerry is still the top smartphone in Washington, but its lead is deteriorating fast, according to the National Journal.

Most alarming of all, less than one percent of all groups polled said they planned to buy a new BlackBerry, while most would buy an iPhone.

Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, the world's richest man, is financing an Internet TV network that will include an interview show with retired CNN host Larry King.

As more people switch to using their tablets and smartphones for Internet use, Slim's new venture could put millions more dollars in his pockets, particularly if advertisers sign on.

Android 4.0 update for Galaxy S II said to arrive on March 15

The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Samsung Galaxy S II has been a long time coming but it seems that the wait is soon to get over. Although Samsung did earlier mention that the S II, along with a few other Samsung devices will be getting the update sometime in March, it did not provide the actual date.

Now, however, a Samsung importer in Isreal called Sunny Communications have revealed on its Facebook page that the update will arrive on March 15, just over a week from today. Here is the translated quite from Facebook:

We promised that we're working on it. You waited patiently. On 15 March it comes: the Android version 4, ICS, tens of thousands of the devices purchased GALAXY SII cellular companies in the country or directly from us. We here are very excited for the launch, hope you :)

This does not mean, however, that all Galaxy S II devices will get the update on March 15. Some may get it later or probably, some may even get it sooner, with the date mentioned above probably being only for the Israeli market. Either way, you won't be having to wait too long now.

Samsung to reveal its mobile line-up for 2012 on March 15

We got a little disappointed when Samsung announced that they won't be holding a press conference at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this month. Rumors, however, turned out to be true, and Samsung will indeed hold a separate press event on March 15 in Amsterdam.

The image above represents the invitation Samsung is sending out for the event in question. As usual, the image doesn't reveal much, but the "Samsung Line-up 2012" sign at the top and bottom are enough to get our wish-wheel spinning.

Could Samsung be announcing the eagerly-awaited by every Android fan Galaxy S III or will this be sort of a warm-up event to show off some of the mid-range products Sammy has prepared for this year?

At this point all that we could do is just guess, although an early spring announcement of the S III will give the Koreans plenty of time for, say, a summer launch.

We'll have to wait and see. In the meantime, you may want to stick around for our in-depth MWC 2012 coverage starting this Sunday.

Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G for T-Mo USA coming in late March

Samsung and T-Mobile USA announced the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G in early January, but it took them this long to announce the launch date (more frustratingly, they haven?t announced all the specs just yet).

The Blaze 4G has a 3.97" Super AMOLED screen, is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU in a Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 chipset and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It has two cameras - 5MP camera with 720p video recording to replace your point-and-shoot camera and a 1.3MP front-facing camera for video chatting purposes.

The phone will also come with TeleNav GPS Navigator preloaded, which provides voice-guided navigation, although the press release doesn?t make it clear if it's free and for how long.

Samsung and T-Mobile have stuffed the Galaxy S Blaze 4G with all that because according to their studies, nearly 80% of smartphone are less likely to carry other devices (cameras, GPS units, etc.) with them.

The 4G stands for 42Mbps HSPA+ by the way, not LTE.

Anyway, you'll be able to grab a Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G from T-Mobile USA stores, dealers and retailers starting in late March. With a 2-year contract (on the Classic plan), it will set you back $150 after $50 mail-in rebate.
